Plywood bending calculator

Woodworking is an art. You probably have to experiment with some scrap to see what actually works. It sounds like you are building a big tray with low sides and flipped over to become a table.

The table will have a nice curved edge all around but you will be hiding the beauty of the kerfed bend. It would be cheaper but you can get thinner plywood in better choice of woods.

Good luck. Reply 5 years ago. Thanks caitlinsdad I agree completely. My piece of plywood is actually 2 ft wide, but I plan to rip off 6 inches to that I can make the table more narrow, and have a 6 inch wide piece to experiment on.

I am a huge perfectionist, and I was hoping to have a mathematical equation to work from. I will still test, and I will free-hand it if no one can help me come up with an equation. But I still wanted to ask. The formula was in the comments of that link. Still a lot of variables to account for such as your machinery and the wood. The posts I have seen by people who use lasercutters to kerf it still do it by trial and error, hoping for the best.

Follow Posted by Dolmetscher I am planning out my first Instructable. It will be a bent kerfed plywood coffee table, There have been a growing number of projects out in the 'makeosphere,' where people are cutting slits or kerfs that go almost completely through a thicker piece of wood, allowing it to be easily bent.

Here is the idea all sketched out.

I need help with the measurements that are in bold. Measure in 2 inches from each end of the board and draw a line. Measure in 2 inches each each side of the board, and draw another line. Thread a standard nut onto each end of the threaded rod and screw it on inches roughly, then slip a flat washer over the threaded rod. Bend each end of the board up to create almost 90 degree angles. Insert each end of the threaded rod into the holes, slip a flat washer over the threaded rod and screw on each of the four "end nuts.

Flip the table over, and enjoy. I don't know if spacing cuts close together for a small curve radius is more or less stable than placing the cuts further apart for a larger radius.Log In.

I have searched high and low for allowable concentrated loads on plywood of various thickness and joist spacing. Anyone know of such an animal? Not specifically. The APA American Plywood Asssociation has a specification that provides allowable stresses in plywood - both for stresses in the plane of the sheet and across the plane.

Most codes like IBC provide maximum spans based on uniform loads but that is not what you are looking for. The only way I know to check plywood for a concentrated load on a span of plywood would be to get the APA specification and use basic statics, analysis, etc. I got the attachment below from www. As far as I can tell, that would be a 3D analysis.Running Centers Mark-out See Full Scale Arc Templates to print full scale arc template to mark out curve, or drag Scale slider to scale if possible.

This calculator is based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The Euler-Bernoulli equation describes a relationship between beam deflection and applied external forces. The simplest form of this equation is as follows:. The nice thing about this theory is that we can use these equations along with the boundary conditions and loads for our beams to derive closed-form solutions to the beam configurations shown on this page.

The bending moment, shear force, slope and defelction diagrams are all calculated using the above equations. Of course, it is not always possible or practical to derive a closed-form solution for some beam configurations. Works with evenly distributed loads only. There are two different types of loads. Its either going to an exterior or an interior load. In other words, it is either going to be on an outside wall, or somewhere on the inside.

The load on an outside wall with clear span trusses is exactly half the load on each wall. This will amount to twice as much load on the exterior walls compared to a building with a center wall. This calculator takes all of this into consideration.

How to Soak & Bend Plywood

You only have to select all of the loads that apply. Most interior beams need to include the roof load. If there is are any questions about anything else, then you should contact your supplier or an engineer. It has been my experience to never use a beam smaller than a two ply 2 x 8.

No matter what the specs say. These small areas are usually door opening on the interior and people are trained that these areas are the strongest place in a house to be in the case of an emergency. On longer spans the beam may require much more bearing space as indicated by this table. Beams of more than one ply must be fastened together with either nails or bolts.
