The Oldsmobile got its name from the FOUR barrel carburetor, FOUR speed manual transmission and TWO exhausts, it was actually pronounced four four two, rather than four forty two or whatever other ways there are of pronouncing those numbers. This is a great looking classic muscle car; bulges in all the right places, fat tires, huge rear wing.
For only, there were vertical bars in a silver grille at the front, rectangular parking lights set in to the bumper and vertical tail lights.

Buyers ran away from Oldsmobile like it was the plague. Only a small group of loyal Oldsmobile buyers remained, many of which were members of the senior citizen community. Oldsmobile spent its last two decades whittling away its great automotive legacy.
Not to mention that Oldsmobile provided hot performance V8 engines years before Pontiac and Chevrolet. Oldsmobile and Cadillac were the first automobile brands to mass produce the overhead valve OHV V8 for the model year. The Rocket V8 became a legend in its time and laid the initial ground work for the upcoming muscle car era since the original muscle car time period would have never existed without the OHV V8.
Another legacy Oldsmobile had successfully forged was it offered reasonably priced luxury and sporty cars to buyers who desired a more upscale car than what the run-of-the-mill automakers like Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge provided at the time. Where many muscle cars buyers back in the golden era, opted for stripped down cars with not many options, Oldsmobile buyers were generally the polar opposite. The started out modestly as a performance package for the F85 and Cutlass.
The downside was the was only equipped with a small-block cubic-inch V8. Yet, the real news for was the optional W V8 — rated at gross horsepower and lb-ft of torque. The W V8 was not just a high performance V8 that Oldsmobile dropped into the engine bay, it was an entire performance package for the With the W, the W25 package was standard which included a fiberglass hood with two large air inlets that fed fresh air into a free-flow air cleaner assembly.
The fiberglass hood had two large hood stripes and two functional ornamental chrome hood tie-downs. The W also included a performance tuned Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor, a high performance cam, and a lightweight free-flow aluminum intake manifold.
A set of high-performance cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds were also part of the package. The W had enough horsepower and torque to frighten most drivers when the accelerator pedal was pushed to the floor. The feeling was like a Boeing at takeoff — the sudden powerful movement forward threw you back into your seat. The net effect was lots of smoke and screeching rear tires, too much throttle could send the rocketing off the road and into a tree or another obstacle or burning the tires to oblivion.
This was the reason why the most potent muscle cars by were so costly for younger buyers to insure. Add to this, the dynamics of if equipped with a manual transmission the fine art of speed shifting. Then you soon realize that it took a very skilled driver to be able to harness the power of these wild animals called vintage muscle cars. By comparison, today new high powered rear-wheel drive high performance cars like the Ford Mustang GT, Chevrolet Camaro SS, and Dodge Challenger SRT8 are so easy to control even during full throttle, due to standard traction and skid control — the computer compensates for any mistakes and makes these cars almost idiot proof.
Back in the day when mistakes were made with cars like the W under heavy acceleration when not in the hands of a skilled driver, the end result could be very costly if not fatal.
A W equipped equipped with a 3.
Muscle cars like the W were certainly not for the faint of heart. Though it had a lot of youth appeal many of the W buyers were a little older than the average muscle car buyer and were usually higher on the socio-economic ladder. However Oldsmobile being an upscale GM division offered a laundry list of options on the forand many buyers loaded up on these options which elevated the price substantially.
The for took the best of the 2-door Cutlass and added all the exterior touches muscle car buyers demanded. The front end had the distinctive and attractive Oldsmobile front grille treatment which included four round headlights. Options OK. No Yes.When Stephen J. Minore was in high school, his father Joe, a gas station operator, took him aside and gave him some advice. I'm 40 years old. Do you want to have hands like this when you get to be my age? Why don't you do something like drafting for a living? It's clean work, and you have a natural talent for it. Stephen took his father's advice, and says now, "Drafting has provided me with a good living and a solid foundation to move ahead, get married, raise a family, and follow other pursuits.
Stephen spent some of his formative years "banging gears and laying rubber all around town" in his uncle Mark's Cutlass Supreme.

His cousin Pete Chillemi owned a Olds W four-speed car, red with white stripes. Sitting in the passenger seat, peering out over that ram-air hood, I was totally corrupted and have been ever since. Stephen's first "real" car was a Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, purchased from a customer of his father's who had bought the car new. In time, he also began buying Oldsmobile parts cars and stripping them. Oldsmobile people would actually go just to look for me.
The technical knowledge came from owning and parting out cars and dealing with Oldsmobile collectors. We would share knowledge about these cars with each other. As these cars became more popular, Stephen began to question things like verifying an Olds as a real I would go to people I had sold parts to and ask, 'You own a don't you?
Can I look at it? My photo file goes back over 20 years.
That really helps when you're putting one of these cars back together. To be able to look at a picture of an original W car from back in the day to reference something is priceless. MCR: What are the areas you look at when authenticating a car?
Minore: I go from the top to the bottom to the best of my knowledge working with the references that I have.
There really is no book that I can pull out and unequivocally say this is the way it was done. Obviously, I look at the VIN on the block and transmission. I look at the fonts. I have pictures of the cars that I actually took apart and took photographs of and can tell within two seconds whether the VIN is right because I have examined so many cars.
I go through the block and look at the Julian codes, heads, and intake manifold if it's not a W You look at the head castings because there are a lot of forgeries out there these days, especially with Oldsmobiles. You've really got to know what you're looking at. The transmission VINs need to be correct, and the factory tag needs to be on the right side of the transmission.
The Julian code on the rearend has to be correct, and the code will tell you what the rearend ratio is. There are Julian codes on the front disc brake calipers, the master cylinder, and the radiator tag. If it's a four-speed car, I look to make sure that nobody's tampered with it and installed a new transmission tunnel.
When Oldsmobile did its four-speed conversions on-line ['72], it just cut out the floor with a torch! On a true four-speed car, you'll see the slag on the edges of the opening. There's a certain spot weld you have to look for where they spot-welded the four-speed transmission boot adaptor bracket into the transmission tunnel. The bloom was off the performance rose byespecially at General Motors, and it took a determined assault on the order sheet to come up with a muscle car worthy of the name.
Luckily, Oldsmobile still identified its strongest by a single option code, W So the muscle car era lived on for another year with the help of the Oldsmobile W Except for new grille and taillamp inserts, the was essentially unaltered fromthough the pillared coupe body was dropped.
Bigger changes were underhood, where GM's ruling that all its cars reduce emissions and run on regular-grade fuel caused a compression-ratio cut in the 's cid V What was Oldsmobile with a malpractice suit.
But there's still some soul left in Lansing, and despite all the furor, a will still churn up all the smoke and fury the average muscle car driver could need and probably handle.
That certainly was true of a W Regular mills lost not only compression, but got a milder camshaft and some other detuning that dropped them to bhp, from both gross ratings. Ws again were factory blueprinted and those used with manual transmission re-tained the hotter cam. Gross output fell slightly less than on the base engine, to bhp from Olds also began listing net output with all accessories in place. The regular came in at bhp, the W at That seemed tame compared to the giddy figures of just a year earlier, but in reality, net ratings more accurately reflected power available at the driving wheels.
It also was true that torquethe most vital factor in acceleration, remained abundant. But the decline in performance was unstoppable. The W setup associated with blueprinted engines and banzai hole shots would last only through '72, though the name appeared on enthusiast-oriented Oldsmobiles for years to come.
The itself reverted to a Cutlass option after ' Return to Classic Muscle Cars Library.
