If you own a firewood business or you're looking to start one up, a conveyor is probably a good investment. After all, a profitable firewood business requires moving large quantities of firewood quickly and easily. But what about the average homeowner or someone who only uses a little bit of firewood every year?

The cost of the machine probably isn't worth it. I'm a fan of any tool that makes moving firewood easierbut a professionally built conveyor can cost thousands of dollars.

To help offset the cost and reap the benefits of the conveyor system many people choose to create their own conveyor by altering old farm machinery. Overall the machines are pretty simple. A conveyor belt or steel track moves along the device transporting your split firewood. The machines typically use a small engine to power a hydraulic pump or chain and sprocket which operates the conveyer belt.

The conveyor assembly is adjustable and uses hydraulic cylinders to raise or lower the height of the track. Optional hand cranks can also be installed on the machine to replace the hydraulic cylinders. The hand cranks require a little more work but they can reduce the total cost of the machine.

The adjustable height allows you to lower the conveyer to quickly fill a truck or trailer. You can also choose to raise it up to create large piles of split firewood. The conveyors are typically used in conjunction with a firewood processor. After the firewood processor cuts and splits the wood, the split pieces fall onto the conveyor which carries them away.

If you're thinking about starting a firewood business, a firewood conveyor can really increase the amount of firewood you move. A profitable business is all about numbers. The more firewood you can move, the more profit you can make. Other than the initial startup cost, a firewood conveyor can be cumbersome to move. The machines are large, typically around 20 or 28 feet in length. Moving the machine takes time. Many owners complain about the effort required to move the machine to a new location.

To create a useful conveyor at an affordable cost, many people choose to alter existing farm machinery to create their own. Old hay elevators or gravel conveyors can be found almost anywhere. With a little modification you can alter the hay elevator to handle firewood. One of the best places to look for used hay elevator is at an agricultural or farm equipment auction. With a little searching and some luck you can usually pick one up at a decent price.

If your lucky enough to have a conveyor you probably couldn't live without it. They're easy to operate and definitely make moving large quantities of split firewood a lot easier.

Should you buy one? That depends on your specific needs. The average person probably can't justify the initial cost, but if your thinking about starting a business a conveyor can be a great investment.A cheap DIY conveyor for moving small loads with precision, all made from common hardware shop parts.

I was doing a pick n place type machine, but became tired of the time needed in a xyz style of machine to travel back and forth. It seemed to make more sense for the part to move close to the dispenser. Conveyors are a basic element of many production systems, and needed a simple open source hardware design. Similar designs have been used in the context of T-shirt dryers e. These tend to use rotisserie motors for continuous motion, whereas I needed the precise control of a stepper motor.

The strength, length and width of your conveyor needs to be determined. I cut the steel bar down to cm so it would fit on my desk, and chose a width of 40 cm with rollers every 15 cm which required 12 rollers.

If it needs to be stronger you could triple the density of rollers. Did you use this instructable in your classroom? Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. Cheap electrical tubing IRL 25 mm is used to make the rollers. Buy the cheapest quality with the 1. Wise to take a bearing with you when buying this to make sure that it fits. It should push in with a gentle to medium push. You should not have to force.

This is what is going to give most of the rigidity and allow you to attach it to a table or attach other tools to the conveyor. You need it to have a dimension that will allow a roller plus the belt to move freely. You'll also be attaching lots of 8 mm bolts, so it will help enormously if it has 8 mm slots in it.

The classic bearing has an outer diameter of 22 mm that corresponds with the inner diameter of the PVC tube. It also has an inner diameter of 8 mm which allows strong 8 mm bolts to be used. These can be picked up from sporty discount shops or ebay in packs of for about 0.

Somewhat rare but available in decent hardware shops, these allow you to grip to the inside of the plastic tube. They act as a coupler between a drive shaft and the tube. This is an expensive luxury but works very well. It is like sandpaper on one side and very sticky on the other side. This is what grips the underneath of the table cloth.

These days they are made of a soft plastic coating with a fabric underside. They are generally sold in 1.

The fabric side helps grip the grippy roller. The plastic top is flexible and relatively durable. This was the cheapest material I could find that had the right properties. I won't go into this side of things. Construction is pretty easy, no special tools needed except for the drive part: I needed a 22 mm drill bit to make a hole for a bearing. The rigidity of the conveyor comes from the steel bars plus at least 2 lengths of 8 mm threaded rod that pass through the middle of the tubes.

For longer lengths, additional pieces of threaded rod would increase rigidity. I used threaded rod at the two ends: 1 all the way through the roller that acts as a belt tightener, and 1 all the way through the drive roller. Cut your pvc tube to length with a saw.

A while back there was a thread for homemade conveyors.

By some quirk I cannot find it by search to post my pics so here is my very own conveyor thread. Like my processor it was made largely from available materials not nessasarily ideal materials, but cheap ones. The main frame was made from some old concrete form. It is an odd C shape. One 4" flange, one 3" with abut a 6" web. Finished length is 17' or enough to load our trucks without a steep angle. Sorry for the very poor pics, camera usually does better, couldn't be the operator could it??

The hopper is not finished and the red boards are 1x4 to extend the sids upwards.
