The content library is a single-instance store of content in Configuration Manager. The site uses it to reduce the overall size of the combined body of content that you distribute. The content library stores all content files for software deployments, for example: software updates, applications, and OS deployments.
The site automatically creates and maintains a copy of the content library on each site server and each distribution point. Before Configuration Manager adds content files to the site server or copies the files to distribution points, it verifies whether each content file is already in the content library. If the content file is available, Configuration Manager doesn't copy the file. It instead associates the existing content file with the application or package.
Configuration Manager copies content files to the drive with the highest priority until that drive contains less than a minimum amount of free space that you specify. You can't configure the drive settings in the distribution point properties after the installation has finished. For more information about how to configure the drive settings for the distribution point, see Manage content and content infrastructure.
To move the content library to a different location on a distribution point after the installation, use the Content Library Transfer tool in the Configuration Manager tools. For more information, see the Content Library Transfer tool. By default, Configuration Manager creates a content library on the central administration site when the site is installed. The content library is placed on the drive of the site server that has the most free disk space.
Because you can't install a distribution point on the central administration site, you can't prioritize the drives for use by the content library. Similar to the content library on other site servers and on distribution points, when the drive that contains the content library runs out of available disk space, the content library automatically spans to the next available drive.
Configuration Manager uses the content library on the central administration site in the following scenarios:.
You migrate content from another Configuration Manager site, and assign the central administration site as the site that manages that content. When you create content at a primary site and then distribute it to a different primary site or a secondary site below a different primary site, the central administration site temporarily stores that content in the scheduler inbox on the central administration site but doesn't add that content to its content library.
Copy it to the root of the drive before the content library is created. After the content library has been created, use the Content Library Transfer tool from the Configuration Manager tools to manage the location of the content library.
Cloud distribution points don't use single-instance storage.Content libraries are container objects for VM templates, vApp templates, and other types of files. Sharing templates and files across multiple vCenter Server instances in same or different locations brings out consistency, compliance, efficiency, and automation in deploying workloads at scale. You create and manage a content library from a single vCenter Server instance, but you can share the library items to other vCenter Server instances if HTTP S traffic is allowed between them.
If a published and a subscribed library belong to vCenter Server systems that are in the same vCenter Single Sign-On domain, and both the libraries use datastores as backing storage, you can take advantage of optimized transfer speed for synchronization between these libraries.
The transfer speed optimization is made possible if the libraries can store their contents to datastores managed by ESXi hosts that are directly connected to each other.
In this case the contents are synchronized by a direct datastore to datastore transfer. Each VM template, vApp template, or another type of file in a library is a library item. An item can contain a single file or multiple files.
In the case of VM and vApp templates, each item contains multiple files. For example, because an OVF template is a set of multiple files, when you upload an OVF template to the library, you actually upload all the files associated with the template. You can create two types of libraries: local or subscribed library. You use a local library to store items in a single vCenter Server instance.
You can publish the local library so that users from other vCenter Server systems can subscribe to it. When you publish a content library externally, you can configure a password for authentication.
You can also upload other file types, such as ISO images, text files, and so on, in a content library. You subscribe to a published library by creating a subscribed library. You can create the subscribed library in the same vCenter Server instance where the published library is, or in a different vCenter Server system. In the Create Library wizard you have the option to download all the contents of the published library immediately after the subscribed library is created, or to download only metadata for the items from the published library and later to download the full content of only the items you intend to use.
To ensure the contents of a subscribed library are up-to-date, the subscribed library automatically synchronizes to the source published library on regular intervals.
You can also manually synchronize subscribed libraries. You can use the option to download content from the source published library immediately or only when needed to manage your storage space. Synchronization of a subscribed library that is set with the option to download all the contents of the published library immediately, synchronizes both the item metadata and the item contents.
During the synchronisation the library items that are new for the subscribed library are fully downloaded to the storage location of the subscribed library. Synchronization of a subscribed library that is set with the option to download contents only when needed synchronizes only the metadata for the library items from the published library, and does not download the contents of the items. This saves storage space. With a sign-up, you have permission to send that person email — namely, your email newsletter or latest published blog posts.
With a content library registration, you give your prospect access to a site — access to exclusive resources like ebooks, videos, webinars, forums, and more.
In the first situation, the content marketer is throwing stuff at the prospect. In the second, the content marketer is inviting you to his place — which is loaded with useful resources. What is VMware Content Library Uses and Creating
A local library is intuitively named in that it stores items in the local VMware vCenter Server instance. You publish the local library so you can use these items in the local VMware Content Library in another vCenter Server. Publishing a library requires that you configure a password to authenticate to the library. When you subscribe to a local library that has been published, you setup a subscribed VMware Content Library.
This will initiate the New Content Library wizard. On the Name and Location screen, choose a name for the new content library and select the vCenter Server that will be hosting it. On the Configure content library screen, you select whether this will be a Local content library or a Subscribed content library. On the Add storage screen, choose the datastore that will host the content library. It is a really great feature that is often underutilized by VMware administrators when sharing resources between vCenter Server environments.
